Vivienne Badaan a exploré la fontion sociale de l’utopie et en particulier l’effet de la pensée utopique sur la volonté de changement, et la capacité à imaginer un futur meilleur. Elle et ses collaborateurs (dont John Jost, psychologue social dont les recherches portent sur la polarisation politique ou la justification du système social existant) analysent, tout comme Kashima , la possibilité que notre vision de l’avenir produise des dynamiques culturelles reposant sur des rapports idéologiques et comportements différents selon que nous percevions l’avenir comme une utopie possible ou une dystopie, que nous soyons, pour reprendre des concepts psychologiques, dans une logique de prévention ou de promotion, d’anticipation des menaces ou de recherche de nouvelles potentialités.
Ils montrent que cette question de l’anticipation du futur, une anticipation utopique dans ce cas, est importante pour mieux saisir son rôle dans la constitution d’une pensée collective plus tournée vers le changement.
Jost et ses collaborateurs ont également voulu voir comment les enfants percevaient un monde utopique en leur demandant d’imaginer un pays et les règles et lois qui existaient. La méthode relève, sans le nommer, du design fiction, et semble particulièrement stimuler les jeunes cerveaux. Cet exercice ludique montre la possiblité d’une élaboration assez précose de ce que pourrait être une société à venir.
